Drywall screws have become one of the most commonly used building materials in our daily lives. But do you know how to choose the right size of drywall screws? The size of the drywall nail you choose depends on the thickness of the keel. Coarse-thread screws have threads that are further apart, while fine-thread screws have threads that are closer together.
When using wood keels, coarse-thread drywall nails are typically used. The coarseness of the threads allows for a better grip on the wood studs, pulling the drywall towards the stud and creating a firm hold. On the other hand, when using metal keels, fine-thread drywall nails are recommended. The point on fine-thread screws is sharper, making them better suited for drilling into metal.
The thickness of the drywall board also affects the size of the drywall nail that should be used. Thicker drywall boards require thicker and longer drywall nails.
To help you choose the appropriate size, here are some common sizes of drywall screws and the thickness of drywall they are suitable for:
- Screws that measure 1-1/4 inches in length are appropriate for sheets of drywall that are 3/8, 1/2, or 5/8 of an inch thick.
- Screws that measure 1-3/8 inches in length are meant for sheets of drywall up to 3/4 of an inch thick.
- For drywall sheets with a thickness of 7/8, 1 inch, or 1-1/4 inches, screw lengths of 1-1/2, 1-5/8, and 2 inches respectively are recommended.
